OSX – maximize window with shortcut

One of the “must have” application for freshly installed OSX is Spectacle. Its a piece of software that allows you to easily control window behaviour with simple and customizable keyboard shortcuts.

In OSX there is special green icon to maximize window to fullscreen. Sometimes it makes the window bigger by 20% sometimes by 50% and sometimes 100%. Why? It does some devious calculations how much window should be resized to show all content in this window – so it does not always have to be full screen then. In the internet you will find some answers that holding shift button and clicking green icon will maximize window. Well – its true only for some applications. On Mavericks it works for Chrome but it does not for Safarii, etc, etc. In Yosemite double clicking at toolbar maximize windows – but it does not work on previous versions of OSX. So overall the situation is not normalized.

The answer for this is Spectacle. Its GPL Licence software that gives you the shortcut to fully maximize window:  Cmd + Alt + F  (⌥⌘F)

There are more shortcuts of course:

  • Move to the left half   ⌥⌘←
  • Move to the right half  ⌥⌘→
  • Move to the top half  ⌥⌘↑
  • Move to the bottom half  ⌥⌘↓
  • Move to the upper left  ⌃⌘←
  • Move to the lower left  ⌃⇧⌘←
  • Move to the upper right  ⌃⌘→
  • Move to the lower right  ⌃⇧⌘→
